FOUNDATION Q & A

If Western Texas College is funded by public funds, why does it need private gifts?
WTC is supported by local Scurry County taxpayers, appropriations from the state of Texas, and student tuition and fees.  In recent years, state appropriations have been cut from 33% to less than 24%.  In order to provide a quality, affordable education, private gifts are an important revenue source that allows WTC to meet the needs of students and fund projects otherwise not possible.

Are gifts to the WTC Foundation tax-deductible?
The WTC Foundation is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. All gifts to the Foundation are tax-deductible to the fullest extent of the law. Please consult with your tax advisor concerning the deductibility of your gift.

What are gifts used for?
Gifts to the WTC Foundation are used in three areas: Scholarships, educational and cultural activities, and campus improvement and development.  Gifts can be designated by the donor for a specific purpose or fund, but may also be given with no restrictions, which allows the most flexibility for their use. If a gift is unrestricted, the WTC Foundation will apply the gift according to where there is the greatest need and where it will make the biggest impact.

Who governs the WTC Foundation?
The WTC Foundation is an institutionally related foundation that is recognized as an independent 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization.  The Foundation is governed by a Board of Directors made up of ten community members. One of these ten members is a member of the Board of Trustees of Western Texas College. The Board of Directors works closely with the WTC leadership to determine Foundation priorities, funding opportunities and development strategies.

Does the WTC Foundation make grants?
The WTC Foundation’s mission is to support Western Texas College. Therefore, the Foundation does not provide funding for other organizations or individuals.
